Okinawa & the Ryukyu Islands

Beach and reef Japan. Different food, different culture, different pace from the mainland.

The Second Trip

Where to Stay in Okinawa

Fly from mainland Japan (2.5 hours from Tokyo, 2 from Osaka). Budget at least 5 days: 2 in Naha, 3 on the outer islands. A week is better. If you only have 5 days, stick to Naha and the Keramas. Ishigaki and Miyako need a week or more. Hotels in Naha run ¥5,000-10,000/night.

This is not mainland Japan. The food, architecture, and culture are Ryukyuan, and the planning is completely different. Outside Naha you need a car on the main island and ferries or flights between the outer islands. No rail pass here. Book cars and ferries ahead in summer.

Featured Destinations

Naha as your hub, plus outer island beaches and jungle across the Ryukyu chain. Most destinations need a car or ferry.

2.5 hrs from Tokyo

Naha

The Ryukyuan Capital

Okinawa's only city with real public transit. The Yui Rail monorail runs from the airport through Kokusai-dori to Shuri Castle. The food is completely different from mainland Japan: goya champuru, soki soba, taco rice, and awamori. IC cards work on the monorail and buses since 2020. Hotels near Kokusai-dori run ¥5,000-10,000/night.

Your base for this region
1 hr from Naha

Ishigaki & Yaeyama Islands

Island-Hopping Hub of the South

Base in Ishigaki's walkable town center and ferry-hop to Taketomi (10 min, traditional village you bike in an hour), Iriomote (40 min, jungle), and Kohama. The town has excellent Yaeyama soba and ishigaki beef. Direct flights from Tokyo (3 hrs) and Osaka. A week on Ishigaki alone is more than enough.

3–5 nights recommended
2.5 hrs bus from Naha

Churaumi & Motobu

The Aquarium Coast

The whale shark tank at Churaumi Aquarium is worth the 2-hour bus ride from Naha alone. Express buses run multiple times daily. Staying overnight at the resort hotels nearby gives you Emerald Beach and Ocean Expo Park at a relaxed pace. Beyond the aquarium area, a car helps.

1–2 nights recommended
50 min ferry from Naha

Kerama Islands (Zamami & Tokashiki)

World-Class Beaches, Day Trip Distance

The clearest water in Okinawa, 50 minutes from Naha by high-speed ferry. Zamami and Tokashiki have white sand beaches with sea turtles and coral reefs you can snorkel from shore. Whale watching runs January through March. Few restaurants on the islands, so pack lunch or eat at the small local shops. Ferries book out on weekends; reserve early.

1–2 nights or day trip
50 min from Naha

Miyako-jima

Okinawa's Beach Island

Flat coral island with beaches that rival anywhere in Southeast Asia. Yonaha Maehama, Sunayama, and Yoshino Coast are the main draws. Three bridges connect Miyako to smaller islands you can drive or bike across. No train, limited bus; a rental car or scooter is essential. Direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka make it possible to skip Naha entirely.

3–4 nights recommended
40 min ferry from Ishigaki

Iriomote

UNESCO Jungle & Mangrove Rivers

90% jungle, UNESCO World Heritage since 2021. Kayak through mangrove rivers, hike to Pinaisara waterfall, or take a water buffalo cart across the shallows to Yubu Island. No convenience stores, limited accommodation, and the jungle is real (Iriomote wildcats still live here). Ferry from Ishigaki runs multiple times daily. Book accommodation early; options are few.

1–2 nights recommended
