Insider Tips

  • A car is effectively required for northern Okinawa flexibility. Without a car, you're on a bus tour schedule. Renting a car from Naha Airport for 1–2 days costs less than the tour plus taxi combination.
  • Allow a full day at Ocean Expo Park: 3–4 hours for the aquarium, additional time for the botanical garden, beach, and outdoor exhibits on the park grounds.
  • Ie Island is 30 minutes by ferry from Motobu Port. Rent bicycles at the port and cycle to the summit of Mt. Gusuku for views over the East China Sea. A solid day trip from anywhere on the northern coast.
  • Nakijin Castle ruins (15 minutes from the aquarium) are on the UNESCO list and most visitors skip them. The stone ramparts extend along a ridge with coastal views.
  • Nago cherry blossoms (late January to early February) are Japan's earliest, using a warmer-adapted sakura variety. Different from mainland cherry blossoms in color (more red and pink) but worth knowing if your trip falls then.

Churaumi is built around one number: 8.2 meters. That's the depth of the main tank, which holds three whale sharks alongside manta rays and thousands of other species behind a continuous viewing panel 35 meters wide. You can stand at the glass for twenty minutes watching the whale sharks circle above your head. No other aquarium in Japan has this. The northern Okinawa coast the aquarium sits on adds a second reason to be here: Ie Island by ferry, Nakijin Castle on a ridge above the sea, and the quiet coastal villages of Motobu.

A car makes all of it easy. Without a car, you are working around a bus tour schedule or spending a significant amount of time at bus stops. That's the logistics decision to make before you plan the day.

How to get to Churaumi Aquarium

By car: About 2 hours from Naha along Route 58 or the Okinawa Expressway. The standard approach for independent visitors.

Without a car: Bus tours from Naha depart daily; most include the aquarium plus one or two other northern sites. Check current tour operators at Naha Bus Terminal. These tours run 8–10 hours and take the logistics off your hands.

By local bus: The 117 or 65 bus from Nago Bus Terminal reaches the aquarium area. Getting from Naha to Nago by expressway bus takes about 1h45m; from Nago the local connection adds more time. The full journey from Naha by bus runs 2.5–3 hours each way.

Okinawa's public transport outside Naha is limited. A car is the recommended approach for anyone wanting to combine multiple northern sites in one day.

Churaumi Aquarium

One of the world's largest aquariums, with a main tank 35m wide and 8.2m deep that holds three whale sharks and multiple manta rays. A continuous viewing window allows close observation at multiple levels.

The whale sharks are fed on a schedule; feeding times are posted at the entrance. The feeding draws the largest crowds to the main tank window. Arrive at opening time (8:30am) to get the best position before the whale shark feeding draws the peak crowd.

Ocean Expo Park surrounding the aquarium includes tropical botanical gardens, a traditional Okinawan village display, the Okinawa Culture Museum, and a small beach on the coast. Entry to the park grounds is free; the aquarium itself is ¥2,180 per adult.

Open 8:30am–6:30pm (8pm in July and August). Closed only on the first Wednesday and the following Thursday in December. Allow 3–4 hours for the aquarium alone; a full day for the entire park.

Ie Island

A 30-minute car ferry from Motobu Port, which runs multiple times daily. Rent bicycles at the port on arrival.

The island's centerpiece is Mt. Gusuku: a 172m volcanic plug that rises sharply from the flat island. The climb takes about 30 minutes with chain assists near the top. Views extend over the surrounding reef and back toward the Okinawa main island. The contrast between the flat island and this single abrupt rock is striking.

The Lily Festival in late April to early May draws visitors for the Easter lily bloom. Outside festival season, the island is very quiet. The last ferry back to Motobu departs in the late afternoon: check the schedule and leave time accordingly before you head for the summit.

Nakijin Castle

UNESCO-listed stone fortress ruins on a forested ridge, 15 minutes south of the aquarium by car. The castle walls extend 1,500m around the hilltop site. The main hall is gone but the stone ramparts are intact and impressive, with views down to the coast. Most visitors to the aquarium skip it entirely; it's a 20-minute addition with a very different character from the marine exhibits.

Built by the Hokuzan kingdom in the 14th century, before the unification of Okinawa. Cherry blossoms at Nakijin bloom in late January to early February each year, among the first in Japan.

What are the honest downsides?

Without a car, the logistics are significantly harder. Bus tours work but give you less control over timing and cut down on the flexibility to add Ie Island or Nakijin.

Motobu town itself has very limited restaurants and services. Plan meals at the aquarium complex (there are several options inside Ocean Expo Park) or stock up in Nago before heading north.

The northern Okinawa coast is spread out. Getting from site to site takes time on single-lane coastal roads, and the distances are real: Nakijin to Ie Island ferry to the aquarium to Nago covers about 40–50km of coastal driving.

The aquarium is crowded during Japanese school holidays and Golden Week. Arrive at opening time to beat peak crowds at the main tank window. Mid-week in low season is the most comfortable experience.
