Beyond Kyoto & Osaka

Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and the overnight trips worth building into your Kansai itinerary.

Kansai

Where to Stay in Kansai

Most people base in Osaka or Kyoto. Osaka is cheaper and more central for day trips. Kyoto is the pick if temples, gardens, and quieter neighborhoods matter more to you than nightlife. Kobe is 22 minutes from Osaka by train and works as a day trip or a night out.

Beyond the three cities, Kansai has onsen towns, a UNESCO pilgrimage trail, and temple stays in the mountains. Budget 4-5 days for the region. Business hotels in Osaka and Kyoto run ¥8,000-15,000/night. The Kansai Wide Area Pass covers trains to every destination on this page.

Osaka

The Food Capital and Your Kansai Hub

Base in Namba or Shinsaibashi for the best transit connections to everything on this page. Dotonbori's food stalls are the obvious draw, but the real eating is in Shinsekai for kushikatsu and the backstreet izakaya around Tenma. Business hotels near Namba Station run ¥8,000-12,000/night. Kyoto is 30 minutes by train, Kobe 22. Every destination on this page starts from here.
